So after a week away doing practically no exercise in Egypt, I was a little worried that I’d lose my cycling chops, and cycling into work would be more difficult. I was wrong – the past couple of days I’ve been shaving a wee bit of time off my daily commute. I’ve been tackling one particular hill with more gusto than usual – I used to have to do that hill in 2nd or 3rd gear, but I’ve been doing it in 5th gear this week. And loving it! How did I ever live without my bicycle?

There was a VERY interesting episode of Horizon on last night on BBC2, called The Truth About Exercise. It didn’t focus on weight loss, but more around health and exercise. Some interesting research recently has shown that just 3 minutes a week of VERY high intensity exercise, in 3 intervals of 20 seconds each, three times per week, can have a profound effect on reducing insulin resistance, which is key in preventing type 2 diabetes. If you have access to BBC2 and iPlayer (not everyone will – outside of the UK you’ll need to wrangle some kind of proxy work-around) you should definitely watch the show – you can get it here.

The evenings are getting lighter and lighter – my entire trip home is now done in daylight – no more scary torch-lit journeys down an unlit cycle path, yay!

And finally – I’ve installed a wordpress optimizing plugin which claims to help my site load faster. I’m not sure it’s made much of a difference – is anyone noticing a difference?

So I’m BACK from Egypt. And it was amazing. We were staying in the most beautiful resort, the weather was perfect, the views from our room were sublime, the staff were so super attentive and… and the food was delicious. The All Inclusive food. And the All Inclusive alcohol. I mostly spent the week lounging by the pool, stirring only to go to the bar every second drink (J went every other drink) and reading A Song of Ice and Fire on my Kindle. I’ve come back not very tanned, but a little sunburnt.

We did manage to leave the resort a couple of times – we went out into the desert to do some stargazing through a big telescope, and out on a boat for a day to get some scuba diving in.

But aside from that, we were pretty slothful.

So I find myself a couple of kilos up on where I was before I left. Not to worry though – I was psyching myself up all day on the way home yesterday, and I’m back on the Dukan wagon today with a vengeance. I’m going to do 10 squats for the next week, and then start increasing my squats by one every day after that, to try and get some strength back in my quads, to try and get my roller derby chops back.

I have cooked my breakfast porridges for the rest of the week, and there’s a chicken in the slow cooker to cook overnight so I have something to munch on tomorrow. Four days of PP (including today) and then I’ll be back on regular Cruise again.

GRRR! My teeth are bared in determination! Bring on Spring!!

(PS – is anyone else finding my blog really slow to load, or is it just me?)

Daily LOSS: 1.0kgs / 2.2lbs
Total loss since New Year: 5.8kgs / 12.76lbs

Today’s menu: PV

Breakfast

  • mug of coffee
  • oatbran porridge with sweetener

Lunch

  • packet of pastrami
  • 3 celery sticks
  • small pack of carrot sticks
  • 2 slices of cheese
  • 30g tub of low fat hummous (3g of carbs)

Afternoon snack

  • Fat free fromage frais with sweetener and cocoa

Dinner

  • 2x “lettuce” burgers – ie burgers with lettuce to hold it all together rather than bread. J had bread. And it was delicious.

Exercise

  • 45 mins walking from bus stop to work and back (I used a further-away bus stop to boost my walking time. :) )

WHOOSH! What did I tell ya? I did a little jig on the scales this morning – you know the one. You’ve all done it at one p0int or another, right?

Now, I had hummous today. Technically, this is a transgression. However, it was a teeeeeeensy tiny tub, low fat, and contains less carbs than my celery (granted, the net carbs are probably higher) … OK, I just did the math on my carb intake for the day. Rough estimate (and overestimating probably) I count 37-40g of carbs today –  with a whopping 12g of this from my two cups of tea and the cup of coffee, plus the milk in my oatbran porridge. I’m thinking about cutting things down to one cup of coffee per day, and drinking oolong or jasmine tea the rest of the day. If I’d done this today, I’d have been below the 30g of carbs per day recommended for ketogenic diets.

Now that I’m almost 2 weeks into my transgression-free run, it’s amazing how much more seriously I’m taking this whole thing. It just goes to show how much of an All-Or-Nothing kinda gal I am.

However. The Holiday is approaching – just another 10 days to go before I’m sitting on a beach on the Red Sea, sipping cocktails and ignoring everything Dukan ever said. For one week. I expect to have to re-de-tox (is that a word?) on my return, because my god I’m looking forward to those cocktails, all of which are included in our All Inclusive package. Don’t hate me if I come back with a few extra pounds…

Well, that’s the anti-whoosh. Not to share-overly though, I was feeling a bit… plugged up, shall we say, all of yesterday. And today the cork stopper has come out. I suspect that this is all to do with going back onto Xenical. Suffice it to say that my evening weigh-in just now has made me confident enough to say that this is just a temporary glitch.

I didn’t get my fromage frais in today – I’m finally at that point of carb cleansing that I’m really not very hungry. There were STACKS of cookies at work today, and until recently they’ve been a real challenge to resist. But today, out of habit, I took in a long whiff of their delicious chocolate-wheaty scent and realised that they’re not that great smelling, actually. I looked at chocolate in line at the supermarket yesterday, and imagined myself eating a bar of it – and to be honest, the pleasure nodes of my brain barely fired at all.

To anyone who’s having difficulty with the carb cravings – try the counting-days-since-last-transgression thing. It’s been 12 days since my last transgression, and I’d be interested to see how long it takes other people to kick the cravings?

Wey-hey! A Monday morning, and my weigh-in stays the same! The lack of Monday-Morning-Bounce is equivalent to a good loss on any other day, given the weigh-in is often 5 hours earlier than the post-Sunday lie-in weight. :)

I went to the doctor today, to renew my prescription of Orlistat. I ran out months and months ago, and the doc agreed to let me try it again. Orlistat is basically double-strength Alli, but under an NHS prescription it’s free, whereas Alli costs £60 or more for just one month’s supply, at half the strength. This is something to force me to carefully regulate my fat-intake, because taking Orlistat with a high fat diet is a recipe for disaster-in-the-pants, IF you know what I mean… ;-)

I’m not recommending Orlistat/Xenical to anyone – everyone’s bodies are different. Your mileage may vary, but it works for me. If you’re tempted, go speak to your doctor, and be fully aware of the “treatment effects” (ie they’re not side effects because you only get these less pleasant effects when you don’t take it right) before you take any. It might help you, it might not. It might be more trouble than it’s worth for you, or more expense if you’re not in a country with free healthcare like the UK.

  • Home made Pollo Siciliana (aka fancy shmancy Chicken Parma, with fresh tomato rather than sauce and no breadcrumbs. NOM!)

Exercise

  • Nuhun.

Sorry for the lack of bloggage. But LOOK! Look at the scales! They’re going in the right direction! I’m down 1kg from where I was last week, and am almost the lightest I’ve been since Nov last year.

I got precious little done today except almost finish sewing another dress, and watch a LOT of Bones. Love that show – David Boreanaz has sure been benefiting from those acting lessons. Gone is annoying, mopey emo Angel, now there is nothing but the utterly charming Booth in his place. I’ll say it again – NOM! ;-)

15 days till we go away on holiday, yay!

Today I went out to the pub with my team for lunch, and of course they had to enthusiastically pick the one pub in the area which doesn’t do ANY kind of carb-free meal, especially not on a protein day. You’ll be so proud of me though – I ended up sitting there surrounded by burgers and fish& chips, and ate only a small pack of peanuts and a pint of diet coke. Fortunately I had some fromage frais back at the office which helped tide me over till dinner. You know you’re into the swing of the carb-free lifestyle when you can essentially skip lunch and your body doesn’t end up hurting you from the hunger.

Not the kind of thing I intend to do regularly, mind you. :)

Aaaand there’s my whoosh. Yay! :)

Feeling much better today – though cycling to work in -5 degree weather is NOT fun. My bike seat was frozen, and apologies for the detail, but… my cooch was ALSO frozen by the time I got to work… ;-)

Day 8 Morning weigh in: 99.0kgs

Total days since last transgression 4&5

Just a quick catch-up post cause I’ve been slack with posting.

Day 7 saw another up on the scales, which made me redouble my efforts to get those bloody Scales of Woe to do something useful with themselves. This paid off on Day 8 – I had a perfect PP day – no cheese, just chicken and my usual breakfast. Day 8 I was off work sick, and so my morning weigh-in may have been a little later than usual, hence the drop. I’ll take it though! :)
